U.S. Nitrogen officials say company had no negative impact on nearby Nolichucky River

Local

U.S. Nitrogen officials sent News Channel 11 a press release Friday, saying the company had no negative impact on the nearby Nolichucky River.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation issued a notice of violation against the company in November 2017.

In January, U.S. Nitrogen’s Plant Manager Andy Velo sent TDEC a response letter.

In the letter, Velo said “Protection of human health and the environment is the utmost importance to U.S. Nitrogen and we are proud of our environmental and safety record.”

On Friday, the company said a third-party firm, Dinkins Biological Consulting, conducted a biological survey of the Nolichuckey River in September 2016.

The company said, “TDEC does not conclude or state that U.S. Nitrogen affected the river, but rather implies that the river is already impacted before it reaches U.S. Nitrogen’s discharge point.”
