(WJHL)- Tennessee Valley Authority officials revealed that a rare salamander has been discovered in a place it hasn’t been spotted since 1991.
According to a post on the TVA’s Facebook page, a “hellbender” was found in the upper Caney Fork.
The post goes on to say, “Hellbenders have not been detected upstream of Great Falls Dam since 1991 and are listed as endangered by the state of Tennessee. ”
TVA officials said the Hellbender is the largest salamander in North America and that they can live for up to 30 years.
Biologists with the TVA were able to collect a tissue sample for DNA analysis and release the salamander back into the water.
