A suspect is behind bars in Abingdon after a crash involving a deputy on Main Street, near Tanner Street.
The crash happened this morning, when a Washington County, VA deputy was traveling behind a white box truck.
The deputy said he heard a crash and had to “slam on breaks” to avoid hitting the truck. The truck struck a power pole snapping it in half.
Wires came down on both the truck and the deputy.
According to Major Ashbrook with the sheriff’s office, they were able to get the deputy’s car from under the wires. We’re told the deputy was not injured.
A suspect is in custody in connection with the crash. Law enforcement brought in a K9 which alerted officers to drugs on the suspect. That person is being held on drug-related charges.
The Town of Abingdon says East Main Street from Tanner Street to Hutton Street is closed. The town anticipates the closure could last 5 hours or more and they ask drivers to use an alternate route.
