Tracy Irvin grew up in the Tri-Cities and began her career as a 3rd grade teacher at Avoca Elementary
School 25 years ago. She’s spent the last 12 years teaching 2nd grade math in the same school.
Irvin says by the time her students get to her in the 2nd grade they’ve decided whether or not they like
math and it’s her job to enhance that drive or get them back on track of loving math. She’s says her
number one goal is to make sure they are engaged in the lesson. Even if they are not getting the
problems right. She says that builds confidence and in turn leads to great success. It’s a formula
that’s worked for a generation of students at Avoca. And those relationships built continue to stand the
test of time.
“I’ve been able to see kids at the age of 8 all the way up to 32. I still see them to this day and we hug
each other. We say all kiNds of things. Once again it’s making that personal connection making
those relationships,” Said Irvin.
Congratulations to Tracy Irvin. This week’s Educator of the Week Kasey Marler
