A section of the ceiling inside the Johnson City Community Theatre collapsed on Monday but the theater is already working on repairs and should have the roof fixed by the end of the week.

Emily Barnes, who is the Johnson City Community Theatre Vice said the Barter Youth Academy was inside the building practicing when the section collapsed.

“We are very fortunate. Barter Youth Academy was in the auditorium practicing at the time. We are so fortunate that it didn’t fall on one of the kids. We immediately shut the theater down when it happened,” Barnes said.

The collapse is blamed on the increase in rains and weather recently brought on by hurricane Florence.

The theater was in need of work and Barnes said they were already planning the repairs when the roof gave way.

The theater board worked quickly to come up with a plan to fix the roof because their biggest production of the year, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is just two weeks away.

Barnes said that the repairs have been scheduled for the roof but the board is planning a major renovation starting in 2019.
