MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot an armed man Wednesday night in Johnson County, according to authorities.
Sheriff Eddie Tester said deputies responded to the 200 block of Pedro Shoun Lane around 8 p.m. after family members asked authorities to conduct a welfare check on an individual.
The individual was identified as Tony A. Smith, 64, by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The TBI says deputies arrived to find Smith armed with two guns.
“Initial reports from the scene indicate that as deputies attempted to speak with Smith, he fired shots from one of the weapons,” the TBI said in a release. “At some point during the encounter, one deputy also fired shots, striking Smith.”
No deputies were injured.
The TBI is investigating the shooting.
