The Scott County Commonwealth’s Attorney sentenced a Southwest Virginia corrections officer to serve six months in prison for sexual battery of an inmate.

The charges are the result of an investigation by the Virginia State Police accusing Nathan Lee Burke, 33, of Gate City, VA, and other corrections officers of harassing an inmate at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield.

The investigation revealed Burke entered the victim’s cell 17 times on one night and moved a board to block a camera pointed in the cell’s direction.

Burke also admitted to bringing the inmate contraband like chewing tobacco and letting the inmate touch him in private areas. The inmate told investigators the contact was unwanted and felt forced.

Burke was sentenced to serve six months in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail, pay a $25,000 fine, and complete 200 hours of community service.
