A Sullivan County lawyer has been disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court.
According to court documents, the court disbarred Everett Hoge Mechem on April 3 for accepting a settlement that was not authorized by his clients in a personal injury lawsuit. He deposited the money into his trust account but never distributed any of it to his clients, the court says.
Documents also show Mechem was previously disbarred on April 28, 2017 for a felony conviction on wire fraud, supplemental security income fraud, false statement, and theft of public money charges. He had not been reinstated since then.
Mechem was ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution and $1,518.82 in court costs.
