Sullivan County Director of Schools Evelyn Rafalowski will retire after this school year.

According to school board member Michael Hughes, Rafalowski will retire on June 30.

Rafalowski served one three year term as Director of Schools.

Hughes says the director decided not to renew her contract because she felt it was time to retire and enjoy more time with her family. He says recent controversies, such as the school consolidation plan and the pending lawsuit against the county, did not impact her decision.

“She was the right person at the right time. We probably couldn’t have done it without her,” Hughes said.

Some parents in Sullivan County expressed their gratitude towards Rafalowski during her time as director of schools, but also feel uncertain about the future.

“I hate that we are going to lose this leadership continuity when it comes to these new big project that just haven’t taken off and I worry about if things can be lost in translation or in vision there,” said Rodney Padgett, a concerned parent.

Rafalowski gave the school board a printed letter of resignation after Tuesday nights special called board meeting.

The school board will discuss finding a new director during a work session meeting next Tuesday.

Rafalowski was first named director of schools back in 2015.
