BLOUNTVILLE, TN (WJHL) — A crash involving a semi-truck and a charter bus carrying Averett University football players remains under investigation tonight.

According to Kingsport Police the charter bus was traveling along Interstate 81 at mile-marker 62 in Kingsport when it experienced mechanical issues.

Police say that’s when the charter bus lost power.

Not long after the football players got off of the bus, a tractor-trailer traveling north bound on Interstate 81 crashed into the back of the charter bus.

Police said that tractor trailer was carrying several thousand gallons of oil in quart-sized containers that spilled onto I-81 after the crash.

As of 10:30p.m. the right northbound lane on I-81 near exit 63 remained closed to traffic.

TDOT was also called to the scene to help with the traffic congestion.

Police were asking drivers to avoid that area for the next several hours as officials worked to clean up the crash site.

Officials with the Kingsport Police Department said while the crash was still under investigation, no charges were expected to be filed.
