A public meeting will be held Thursday night in Kingsport about open burning at Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport.

Open burning is illegal, but it’s allowed at Holston Army Ammunition Plant and at some other military installations because the United States Army has no other safe alternative for disposing the waste.   News Channel 11 first reported on concerns about the practice in November 2017.

The Army has made explosives at the plant in Kingsport for decades and for years has open-burned waste.

Environmental groups say they believe the practice creates a threat to human health, and recently the Army announced its developing technology to reduce the practice.

The group Volunteers for Environmental Health and Justice has been outspoken in its criticism of open burning and the Army’s response to public concerns.

The meeting will be held April 11 th at 5:30 p.m. at the ETSU Allandale Campus in the Holston Meeting Room.
