Pub bars legalized in downtown Elizabethton through City Council vote

You soon will be able to go to a bar in downtown Elizabethton.

Thursday night, Elizabethton City Council members passed a resolution allowing pubs in the downtown district.

Current rules require businesses that sell alcohol to make most of their profits from food.

The new ordinance will allow pubs that sell mostly microbrewery beers.

A local couple has plans to open a business called Riverside Taproom.

The vote was 5 to 1 with Councilman Bill Carter voting no.

Some spoke out against the pubs ordinance concerned more access to alcohol would lead to problems downtown and increased alcohol addiction.
