Local pharmacies and clinics urge people to get their flu shots, after last years 3,897 cases of the flu and 21 flu-related deaths reported by Ballad Health Hospitals.
It could be the difference between a sick or a healthy holiday season. Local pharmacists can’t stress it’s importance enough.
“Flu season can be very devastating. It’s really hard on both kids and elderly,” said Joshua Cloyd, a Pharmacist at Moody’s Pharmacy. “Make sure you get a flu shot so your body builds up those antibodies.”
This year Jamie Swift, Ballad Health Director of Infection Prevention, says that flu season is off to a slower start. As of October first, Ballad Health has diagnosed 10 cases of the flu in all of their hospitals and 27 in urgent care clinics.
“It’s really hard to predict what is going to happen right now we are seeing very minimal spread across our counties,” Swift said. “It’s important to remember that the flu can be very deadly. It does claim lives every year.”
Aside from getting a flu shot, there are other ways to prevent the flu.
“And then your other infection prevention measures are just washing your hands and if you are sick staying home when you are sick.”
The peak of the flu season is between January and March. Many local pharmacies take insurance to cover the charges for a flu shot. If you would like to get a flu shot near the Johnson City area, here are a few locations you may want to visit:
