Local home builders concerned over adoption of new energy code

The adoption of the 2018 International Building Codes were the topic of discussion at a Johnson City Builder Association meeting Monday evening.

This month’s program was offered in conjunction with the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office.

A major topic discussed at Monday’s meeting was the new energy code. Local homebuilders told News Channel 11 it’s something they are concerned about.

“It’s adding a lot of money to homes, probably around between two or three percent. It’s costing more to build a home, so we are very concerned about the new energy code,” said Tim Hicks, owner of Hicks Construction.

City commissioners and city and county building and zoning departments were also at the meeting.
