Katie WIdener jokes with her students don’t be afraid to change your mind because in college she
changed majors nine times. The Sullivan North Middle School teacher grew up in Kingsport, went to
Dobyns-Bennett and has spent her entire 12 year career in Sullivan County.
Widener says helping people understand math problems and equatons has always come natural to her
and she loves to watch that look in her students eyes when they start to understand math. Her
classroom atmosphore is relaxed, her style, conversational. She says the key is to understand how
each student learns and that starts with relationships.
“We have to come up with different ways. Everybody doesn’t learn the same way and that’s something
as teachers,12 years I may try something totally different with a kid this year then I tried with a kid last
year or even 5 or 6 years ago. It’s helping them find they joy when they get it that gives you joy ,” Said
