Johnson City demolishes downtown breezeway wall

We previously reported that Johnson City closed a popular pedestrian breezeway in the downtown area.

Several months ago, city officials noticed a bowing in the wall.

The city closed the breezeway and planned a demolition, which took place today.

The Director of Facilities says the demo went safely as planned – the wall fell as crews removed it from the top down.

“We noticed that it started looking like it was getting in a weak spot so we just had everybody move out, stood there for a little while and then it just turned loose from the existing wall and slid down and slid under it,” said Randy Trivette. “No one was injured or hurt.”

The demolition crew will have the brick wall completely down and cleaned up by December 15th. The city will then begin rebuilding the wall.
