JCPD: Man killed in I-26 crash; Driver faces vehicular homicide by DUI

Local

Johnson City police have identified the man killed in a crash overnight in Johnson City.  And now a Kingsport man is facing charges of vehicular homicide by intoxication.

The driver who was killed has been identified as 21-year-old Raymond Cox of Johnson City.

Police said Cox, the driver of a 1997 Honda Civic, was struck from behind by a Ford F-150 driven by 29-year-old William Lawson of Kingsport.

Police said the driver of the Civic slowed down for emergency personnel who were responding to a crash that happened just minutes before. According to a report, that’s when the Ford F-150 struck the Civic from behind — propelling the Civic down the interstate and into the center cable barriers.

Cox was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report.

JCPD says Lawson has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of prescription medications. He was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of $51,000 bond.

He is expected to appear in Washington County General Sessions Court today at 1:30 pm.

The crash remains under investigation by the Johnson City Police Department Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team.
