JCPD: 1 dead after getting struck by vehicle on West Market Street

UPDATE – The Johnson City Police Department has identified the person that died after getting struck by a vehicle on West Market Street today as Gary E. Bailey, 55, of Johnson City. 

JCPD issued the following release to News Channel 11: 

On 05/25/2019 at 12:07 p.m., officers of the Johnson City Police Department responded to West Market St. and Leisure Lane in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a silver 2010 Ford Edge. When officers arrived on scene, the pedestrian was determined to be deceased from the impact.  The victim was identified as Gary E. Bailey (55 years old, 500 South North Street, Johnson City, Tennessee).  At this time, the Johnson City Police Departmentā€™s Traffic Reconstruction Team has assumed the investigation and it is ongoing.

All lanes of traffic are reportedly back to normal at this time.

The Johnson City Police Department is continuing their investigation into a case where a person reportedly died after walking in front of a vehicle on West Market Street. 

The incident happened near the West Market Street Wal-Mart location

Police say the person reportedly tried to cross the road when they were hit by the vehicle. 

News Channel 11 first learned of the accident at 12:27 p.m. 

People are asked to avoid this area if possible as crews continue to work the scene of the incident.

Westbound traffic is being allowed at this time. 

It was first reported to News Channel 11 that it was a motor vehicle crash. JCPD then confirmed on the scene a vehicle struck a person. 

The scene is still under investigation.

No details on the victim or the driver are being made available at this time.
