Southwest Virginia authorities are investigating after a body was found Saturday in Russell County.
According to Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster, the decomposed body may belong to a man missing from Buchanan County since late 2018.
Foster said one of his investigators was in Roanoke Monday, as an autopsy was being performed by the state medical examiner’s office.
Russell County Sheriff Steve Dye announced his office received a call from a property owner in the Lewis Creek section of Russell County, VA saying that a body had been discovered.
Members of the Russell County Criminal Investigation Division as well as members from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded.
Sheriff Dye says the body has been recovered and that the scene has been processed.
Sheriff Dye says the body was recovered in the nearby area where extensive search efforts were conducted back in January of this year in reference to a missing person case involving a Buchanan County man.
Since that report, Sheriff Dye stated that his office has been working closely with Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police on that case.
Sheriff Dye stated that the incident is actively being investigated and that more details will be released following the report from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
