9:15 p.m. (UPDATE) GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL)- TBI officials released more information following an officer-involved shooting in Greeneville Monday afternoon.
TBI spokesperson Leslie Earhart said in an interview Monday night the incident stemmed from a hit-and-run in the Lowe’s parking lot.
“The incident was reportedly domestic in nature and involved a man, identified as Travis Mullins who was reportedly targeting a woman who he had been dating,” Earhart said.
A Greeneville police officer said Mullins left Lowe’s then came back to the parking lot dressed in a Cocke County Sheriff’s Office uniform carrying a weapon.
“At some point, for reasons still under investigation, Mullins was able to get back in his vehicle and grab a second firearm. At some point during the confrontation, Mullins reportedly pointed the gun at the Greeneville officer resulting in the officer firing shots, striking Mullins,” Earhart said.
Mullins, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to TBI officials.
The Greeneville officer was not injured in the shooting.
TBI officials said in Monday night’s news conference that Mullins was employed with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer.
Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes issued the following statement regarding the incident:
“It is with a heavy heart that one of our own employees and friend Travis Mullins is deceased. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Travis Mullins and for the Greeneville Police department. This is a sad situation for everyone involved.
