GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – UPDATE – New details have been released on the crash that claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman in Greeneville.
According to a report from the Greeneville Police Department, Kayla Cody died after a crash that occurred on East McKee Street around 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning.
The report says a Greene County deputy spotted Cody’s car on Jonesbridge Road and it was clocked at going 72 miles per hour.
The deputy reportedly turned on his lights, but by the time he had turned the vehicle around, Cody’s vehicle was out of sight.
Since the vehicle was out of sight, the deputy did not pursue. He allegedly drove up and down the road searching for the vehicle.
The deputy said he noticed the smell of a deployed airbag and saw damage to a tree.
After investigating, the vehicle was found off the roadway, where it had crashed into a tree. Cody was unresponsive.
EMS pronounced Cody dead on the scene.
Greeneville Police officials confirmed one person was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning.
Authorities responded to East McKee Street near Winchester Drive around 5:30 a.m. where a driver, identified as Kayla Cody, 20, was found dead inside the vehicle.
Greeneville Police said the investigation was ongoing and that more details about the crash were expected to be released Monday evening.
