Ethan Self of Greene County has been named the 2018 Student of the Year at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) – Elizabethton campus.

School officials say Self will receive a diploma as a diesel technician after completing the 20-month Diesel Power Equipment program.

According to Self, the love of farming got him prepared for this part of his life. Self grew up on a farm in the Chuckey community.

In an interview with TCAT staff, he said he chose TCAT – Elizabethton because “I wanted to learn how to repair farm equipment.”

Self travels to Knoxville later this month for the East Tennessee Regional Competition in a bid to become the state’s Student of the Year – now dubbed the Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Students from 13 community colleges and 27 TCAT campuses are competing for the award.
