Greene County investigators searching for caller in missing persons case

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a caller who may have additional information needed to solve a missing persons case that originated in North Carolina.

Investigators have been searching for Matthew James Smith, 34, since November 2018. He was reported missing in Burke County, North Carolina. 

Deputies said on November 8, a person called the local National Forest Service office around noon. That caller reported seeing a suspicious person walking on Kennedy Cabin Trail. This person told the caller that his vehicle was broken down on the mountain. 

Investigators said this caller, probably a bear hunter, could have information they need regarding the specific location the man was seen. 

Investigators discovered Smith’s vehicle on Kennedy Cabin Trail in November. Deputies searched the area, but did not find Smith. 

Greene County deputies are asking anyone who was on Viking Mountain Road or the Kennedy Cabin Trail around November of last year to call them. Detective Sgt. Morgan can be reached at 423-798-1800.
