A former Bristol, Virginia firefighter who is now a police officer and firefighter in Texas was severely injured while fighting a fire earlier this week.
ABC affiliate KLTV reports Christopher Vannoy suffered burns Monday afternoon.
According to KLTV, he is now a police officer and firefighter in Longview, Texas.
Vannoy noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s garage structure Monday and decided to investigate.
A fire marshal tells KLTV that when he lifted the door to the structure, flames “flashed out” at him”, burning over half his body.
Vannoy was the only person injured in the fire.
He was not on duty at the time of the incident.
According to a Facebook post by the Bristol, Virginia Professional Firefighters Association, Vannoy is a former Bristol firefighter and paramedic.
He could remain in the ICU for more than 50 days as he recovers.
