A composer and artist, born and raised in East Tennessee, was named a Pulitzer prize winner.

Oak Ridge native Ellen Reid earned the prize for her opera ‘Prism’. The opera premiered at the Los Angeles Opera’s “off grand” series back in November.

Her parents, who still live here in East Tennessee, could not be more proud and excited for their daughter.

“She was walking in the air, she was so thrilled, said Karen Reid. “And we were too,” her father Francis added.

“We couldn’t really talk to each other for a while because we were screaming,” said Karen Reid.

Reid’s opera focuses on surviving sexual assault. She posted a statement on her website saying that while she did not plan for the timeliness of the subject, she is, “so grateful that it has resonated with audiences.”
