JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) – Dozens of people came out to Persimmon Ridge Park in Jonesborough Saturday to support the police department.

The “Paws in Blue” event is to raise money for another K9 officer for the town.

New K9 officers are costly at around $13,000 to $15,000. Right now, the department has one K9 officer named Loki and his handler named Dustin. They’re on almost 24 hour call.

K9s from other departments competed with each other at the event, there was a dog kissing booth, dog washing station, food and more.

The department has already raised thousands of dollars.

“One of the big things that can be of help to police officers protecting them, and helping them do their job better are K9s. And we lost a K9 last year, we have 1 left and our goal is to ultimately have 4 K9s, so there’s 1 on every shift, so there’s 1 available all the time,” event organizer Ruth Verhegge said.

Verhegge said she plans to set up at the upcoming Jonesborough Storytelling Festival and has more events planned for next year.
