Controlled burns planned for national forest in Carter, Johnson counties

Forestry officials have planned several prescribed burns in Johnson and Carter counties. 

Weather permitting, the U.S. Forest Service will conduct the burns between Wednesday and Sunday. 

Three burns are planned for the Cherokee National Forest in Johnson County while one is planned for Carter County. 

  • Heaberlin – N 36 33.6495 W 81 55.0426
    390 acres in Johnson County approximately 3.5 miles north of Shady Valley along McQueen Gap Rd.
  • Battleham – N 36 29 23.4 W 81 54 11.41
    740 acres in Johnson County approximately 2 miles southeast of Shady Valley and approximately 5 miles west of Mountain City along Hwy 421.
  • Brickyard – N 36 30’ 31.778 W 81 53’ 14.542
    120 acres in Johnson County approximately 2 miles east of Shady Valley and approximately 5 miles west of Mountain City along Robbins Hollow Rd (FS Rd 4052).
  • Otherside – N 36 13 27.6 W 82 0 37.44
    100 acres in Carter County approximately 4 miles north of Roan Mountain along Walnut Mtn Rd.

Prescribed burns reduce hazardous fuels that can feed forest fires and also enhance wildlife habitats and tree growth.
