A Tri-Cities community is coming together for one of their own, a member of the Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office who is fighting cancer.
Dozens of people packed in the Telford Diner Saturday to raise money for Sgt. Ralph Gent as he battles pancreatic cancer.
Many people showed up wearing t-shirts in support of Gent, who has worked at the sheriff’s office for more than 20 years.
His daughter Candace Gent said it’s meant the world to her family during this time.
“He’s been out of work for a while, back-and-forth to Vanderbilt,” Gent said. ” [It] just helps out with my mom being off to help him.”
Chief Deputy Leighta Laitinen helped organize the fundraiser.
“We’re hoping to help him, help his family cause we don’t want them to worry about money right now, we want them to worry about him getting better,” Laitinen said.
More than 300 people came out to show their support for Gent Saturday.
