College students build houses for Appalachia Service Project at BMS

Local

While the focus is on the world’s fastest half mile this weekend in Bristol, Tennessee, some college students from across the country are using this as an opportunity to give back to the community.

It’s part of the Race to Build project, where students from building construction programs form teams to build houses for three families in Bristol.

Abraham McIntyre of the Appalachia Service Project said each team is scored on focus points like safety, speed and accuracy.

“They’re taking what they learned in college and now putting it into real life experiences and giving back to the community, which is just an incredible way to give back and bring awareness to critical home repair and replacement,” McIntyre said.

These teams are made up of students from Iowa State University, Middle Tennessee State and Auburn.

The winner of Race to Build will be announced Sunday at noon.
