Carter County Rescue Squad helps save diver stuck underwater at Buckeye Lake

Carter County Rescue Squad went across the state line to help with a rescue.

Terry Arnold, head of Carter County 911, confirmed a team of four members traveled to Beech Mountain and rescued a man that was submerged in Buckeye Lake.

Arnold said they received a call near 7 p.m. of a Beech Mountain maintenance worker trapped underwater.

The man was 22 feet below the lake after getting sucked down a tube that was controlled by a valve.

Arnold says the team arrived on scene around 8:30 p.m. and were able to retrieve the man from the water a little after 10 p.m.

The rescue team was comprised of Craig Shaw, Bill Thacker, John Burleson and Richard Markland. They assisted local emergency personnel.

Arnold says the man is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital and is listed in good condition according to the Town of Beech Mountain.

Due to the malfunctioning valve, the town is having to conserve water.

Beech Mountain Police Department say they do not have a comment at this time, but will provide information soon.
