The Elizabethton Police Department is investigating a break-in that happened overnight at the Carter County Courthouse.

The break-in resulted in officials deciding not to open the courthouse for government business.

According to Carter County Mayor Rusty Barnett, “the County Clerk’s Office was closed on Wednesday, November 28, due to a break-in which happened in that office the night before. The Clerk’s Office will reopen for business on Thursday, November 29. We apologize for any inconvenience to residents who needed to get their car tags or conduct other business in the office, but we had to remain closed to allow the police to do their jobs and to clean up the office once the officers finished.”

No other details about the case have been released to the public.
