Carter County Mayor Rusty Barnett confirms that plans are underway to possibly bring a new resort to Watauga Lake.

Barnett tells News Channel 11 that the plan for the 130-acre resort will be discussed during Tuesday afternoon’s Planning Commission meeting.

If approved by the planning commission, it will go before the full Carter County Commission for a vote in April.

Barnett says, if approved, the new resort would be located off Highway 67 near Watauga Lake and construction would be broken up into three phases.

  • Phase One would include the construction of an inn and other amenities near the lake, including a restaurant.
  • Phase Two would include the construction of a skating rink and a village within the resort.
  • Phase Three would include the construction of villas and condos.

Barnett adds that if the plan is approved, an estimated 500-plus jobs could come to the county once construction of the resort is completed.

More details on the resort will be made available during Tuesday’s meeting.
