Bristol Motor Speedway honoring the life of Sgt. Steve Hinkle

Local

A bridge that often has hundreds walk across for each race at Bristol Motor Speedway always included the smiling face of Sullivan County Sheriff Office Sgt. Steve Hinkle.

To honor the late Sullivan County officer, a special memorial has been placed outside the yellow bridge near Earhart Campground.

A spokesperson for BMS says that Sgt. Hinkle patrolled that bridge for nearly 15 years and that staff always enjoyed working with him.

Sgt. Hinkle died at the end of February after responding to a welfare check, being shot by a suspect.

Hundreds gathered for his ceremony at Sullivan Central High School, where he also served as a student resource officer.

Sulivan County Sheriff’s Office provided us with the following statement via email:

We are appreciative of Bristol Motor Speedway recognizing the ultimate sacrifice that Sergeant Hinkle made protecting the citizens of Sullivan County.
