Body found in Nolichucky river identified as 26-year-old man

UPDATE (2:45 p.m.)- Officials with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department have identified the body found in the Nolichucky River Sunday.

According to authorities, 26-year-old Wade Garett Gilland was found in the river Sunday not far from Birds Bridge in Greene County.

The body was sent to William L. Jenkins Forensic Center in Johnson City for an autopsy.

According to that news release, “A preliminary autopsy revealed no significant trauma meaning no sharp/blunt force injuries were found. The full autopsy results are pending at this time.” 

The release also stated, “The Greene County Sheriff’s Department extends our sympathies to Mr. Gilland’s family who has been notified of the Forensic Center’s findings.”

Greene County Sheriff’s Department Chief Detective Jeff Morgan tells News Channel 11 that a preliminary autopsy report shows the man discovered in the Nolichucky River on Sunday was a drowning victim. 

Morgan says that is all the information the department has at this time. 

The body was discovered in the Nolichucky River near a boat ramp off Birds Bridge on Old Asheville Highway.
