25 years ago: NASCAR champion killed in Blountville plane crash

BLOUNTVILLE, TN (WJHL) – Sunday marks 25 years since a plane carrying a racing champion crashed in the Tri-Cities.

On April 1, 1993, NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki and three others were killed when their plane crashed in a field near Blountville.

They were flying in for that weekend’s Food City 500 race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Kulwicki, who drove the No. 7 Ford, was a Winston Cup Series Champion. 

He was 38 years-old when he died.
