2 local students participating in 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Two students from East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are in Washington, D.C. this week to compete in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee. 

Selena Walker, 13, is a 7th grader at Ashley Academy in Johnson City. She is speller number 408 out of 567.

According to her profile, Selena loves to travel. She has been to Shanghai, Paris, Dublin, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Key West, Alaska and Hawaii.

Ashley Academy congratulated Selena and wished her good luck this week in Washington, D.C.

Jerry Huang, 14, is an 8th grader at Tazewell Middle School in North Tazewell, Virginia. He is speller number 477 out of 567. 

According to his profile, Jerry loves to play video games in his free time. His favorite video games are racing games.

Preliminary rounds for the spelling bee continue today and Wednesday, May 29. 

Finals are Thursday, May 30.
