JONESVILLE, Va. (WJHL) — UPDATE – The Virginia State Police are investigating after a man was seriously injured in a fight involving an axe and a handgun.
According to a release from VSP, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was called about a fight at 5:19 p.m. on Wednesday between two family members in the 100 block of Sugar Maple Drive in Jonesville.
Minutes later, a second call was made to authorities, claiming the fight had escalated and left one of the men unconscious.
VSP reports a third call was made, during which the caller said the man had regained consciousness and the fighting had resumed.
The caller reportedly said one of the men in the fight was armed with and axe and the other had a handgun.
VSP reports deputies and VSP personnel responded to the scene at 5:35 p.m. and received a report that the man with the gun had shot the man with the axe.
The release says the 53-year-old man with the axe was transported to the Bristol Regional Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.
VSP reports the 29-year-old man with the gun was found at the scene by deputies and is cooperating with investigators as of Friday morning.
Charges are currently pending, and the investigation is ongoing.

A suspect was located “a short distance” away and was taken into custody, according to VSP.
