For about a month, News Channel 11 has been working to track down a candidate hoping to become a Commissioner for Greene County’s third district. According to the County Trustee’s office Clifford “Doc” Bryant owes more than $10,000 in unpaid personal property taxes.
Documents News Channel 11 obtained from the county Trustee’s office show Bryant owes unpaid property taxes for Bryant Chiropractic Clinic dating back to 2002.
For the county Bryant owes over $4,000. He owes the city of Greeneville more than $5,000 that business. Bryant also owes unpaid personal taxes dating back to 2005. For a shooting range called “Tac 2” he owes nearly $2,000 to the county for that property.
Combined, the trustee’s office says Bryant owes more than $12,000 in unpaid property taxes.
According to these county documents Bryant’s unpaid personal property taxes date back more than 18 months.
“Any unpaid taxes at that point are sent to the clerk and masters office for collection,” County Trustee Nathan Holt said.
County Trustee Nathan Holt says there is no easy way to enforce property owners to pay personal property taxes. He says the county relies on property taxes each year to help generate revenue.
“Each year, the county commission actually sets a budget and each penny of property taxes allocated to the different funds of the county based on needs,” Holt said.
For now, candidate Clifford “Doc” Bryant is still responsible for thousands of dollars in funds he owes a county he is vying to help run.
The trustee’s office says if anyone has unpaid personal property taxes they can reach out to their offices to settle payments.
County Trustee Nathan Holt also says the Trustees Association is looking at possible ways to bring suggestions to the legislature that could create laws holding property owners accountable for not paying personal property taxes.
