Forest fire in Carter County sparked by overnight house fire

CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Saturday morning fire crews were on scene battling a forest fire in Carter County they said was sparked by an overnight house fire.

James Heaton with the Tennessee Division of Forestry said firefighters were called out to a home in the area of Old Railroad Grade Road off of Highway 19 E around 2am Saturday.

Heaton said that house fire then lead to the surrounding woods to catch on fire, spreading to at least 25 acres by 11am Saturday.

“Conditions are extremely dry this year, so even the least little bit of spark or ember can set the woods on fire and cause a big fire like what we have here today. We are having a lot more active fire behavior than what we are accustomed to, so that means we have to spend a lot more time on the fires trying to contain and hold those fires,” Heaton said.

At least three homes were being threatened by the forest fire early Saturday morning, but Heaton said no evacuation orders were in place.

Firefighters were expected to be on scene throughout the afternoon Saturday.
