DUNCANNON, PA (WHTM) – Ciara Meyer has been gone for 17 days.

“Every time I wake up, I think of her,” her grandmother Alice Gehman said.

“We are coping one day at a time,” uncle Jason Gehman said.

Meyer was killed Jan. 11 when a constable was serving an eviction notice at her home on Rebecca Drive near Duncannon. Police say Ciara’s father, Don Meyer, pointed a gun at the constable when he came to the door. The constable, Clark Steele, grabbed his weapon and fired one shot. The bullet went through Don Meyer’s shoulder and into the 12-year-old’s chest and right through her heart, killing her.

Part of the healing process for Ciara’s mother and her family was meeting with the constable to let him know they forgive him.

“He just needed to have some kind of closure that we don’t blame him for this,” Alice Gehman said. “It went wonderful and this man has so much pain, I cannot even explain it to you.”

“When I was holding him and he was saying how sorry he was, I said ‘how are you?’ and he said, ‘I can’t breathe,’ and I said, ‘just slow down because everyone is having trouble breathing, believe me’.”

“He was thanking us and he told us how much it meant that we took our time to meet with him. I said, ‘this is good for all of us’,” Jason Gehman said.

The family recently saw Don Meyer at a court hearing.

“It really didn’t seem as if he had any feelings. It is kind of looking into a black hole in his eyes. There was nothing there showing any sort of concern about what he had done,” Jason Gehman said.

The family believes Meyer is responsible for Ciara’s death because he allegedly pointed a weapon at the constable first. They agree with Perry County District Attorney Andrew Bender’s decision to charge Meyer with Ciara’s death.

“I think he is deserving of every single charge,” Jason Gehman said.

“I hope he never gets out, because if he does we are in trouble,” Alice Gehman said.
