A group of students from East Tennessee State University brought home gold, silver and bronze medals earlier this month after competing in the 2015 USA Weightlifting Regional Championships, held in St. Louis.
The women’s team from ETSU took first place, and one student qualified for the national championship event later this summer.
The seven students who participated included members of the U.S. Olympic Training Site at ETSU and the Stoneage Weightlifting Club. Of the seven students who participated, five won medals. They include:Megan Poole
, of Gainesville, Ga., who won a gold medal in snatch, a silver in the clean and jerk and a gold in overall competition in the women’s 69kg weight class. Poole will compete at the national championship event this August in Dallas.
In that same weight class, Abby Barron, of Port Orange, Fla., won a silver medal in snatch, a gold medal in clean and jerk, and a gold for overall in junior class, which represented women 20 years of age and under.Jessica Kinsler
, from Gainesville, Fla., competed in the 75kg junior class and won a silver medal for snatch, a silver for clean and jerk, and a silver for overall.Kaleb Sargent
, who competed in the men’s 77kg weight class, brought home a bronze medal for overall performance in the junior class. He is a native of Johnson City.Cameron Griggs
, of Columbia, S.C., claimed a bronze medal in the snatch competition in the 94kg weight class.
In 2012, ETSU was designed as an official U.S. Olympic Training Site for weightlifting and now provides scholarship support and expert training for students who wish to compete in weightlifting at the elite level.
