PIGEON FORGE, TN (WJHL) – It’s Dollywood’s birthday! Today the park turns 30 years old. It was on this day in 1986, Dolly Parton opened the amusement park in Pigeon Forge, TN.

The park originally opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad with the engine train Klondike Katie as the main attraction. Over the years, the theme park has had many names including Silver Dollar City as late as 1977.

Now. Dollywood covers 150 acres, 40 rides, 15 different shows and several large festivals.

Just last week, Dollywood announced just started testing the lightning rod roller coaster, but they are waiting a few more weeks before fans can give it a whirl.

The ride is based on a 1950s hot rod and is known as the world’s fastest wooden coaster. Park officials say it’s the largest attraction investment in Dollywood’s history.
