Dobyns Bennett HS band makes history at national competition

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Dobyns Bennett High School is the first Tennessee high school band to qualify for the top 12 at the Bands of America Grand National Championship since 1997. Sunday morning, family and friends welcomed the band home from Indianapolis.

100 bands from across the country competed for just 12 spots.

“They said number 12 in the event of a tie both teams in the rule book get to make it and then they called Dobyns Bennett and people just started crying and screaming,” Freshman/Baritone player, Jasper Hunley-Bota said.

Senior/Head Drum Major, Chandler Woods said their band is really like a family.

“We say band family all the time, sometimes we’re picking at each other we’re fighting just like a family but you know all in all we really love each other and we had a great experience,” Woods said.

Students said they are ready for some rest after the nearly seven hour journey but it was an experience they’ll never forget.
