Delorean going back into production

HUMBLE, TX (CNN) – it was silver, sleek and futuristic at the time. The car made famous by the “Back to the Future” movies, the Delorean, hasn’t been made for more than three decades. But soon that will change at the Delorean motor company in Humble, TX.

The Delorean is going back to the future and into production.

“The majority of what we have here are customer-owned cars that are in for restoration, ” Stephen Wynne, CEO of De Lorean Motors. “It’s fantastic! It is a game changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen.

CEO Stephen Wynne brought the Delorean Motor Company in 1987. For the first time, the Delorean will be manufactured on American soil here in humble.

He has dozens of the cars in Texas. Some are owned by the company, but many are shipped here from around the world to be refurbished.

“That was a green light to go back into production. That was prohibited. It was against the law to do it,” said Wynne. “It’s huge for us.”

The company will build replica 1982 Deloreans under a low volume manufacturing bill approved by the federal government.

He estimates they have enough supplies in stock to build about 300 cars. He hopes to go from building one a month to one a week.

You can buy a refurbished model for $45,000 to $55,000. Wynne hopes to sell the new ones for less than $100,000.

That all depends on the modern engine.

“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car,” said Wynne. “You have like a fiberglass underbody.”

Wynne hopes to have the first new Delorean roll off of the production line early next year.
