Authorities have identified the gunman accused of fatally shooting his wife as 63-year-old Harry Weaver. News Channel 11 also confirmed Weaver is a local school bus driver.
The shooting happened on Wednesday at Dr. David Guy Dentistry located at 150 Clinic Private Drive off Colonial Heights Road in Kingsport.
Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy said the suspect entered the dentist office and shot his 52-year-old Kelly Weaver. Kelly was an employee at the practice.
According to witnesses, Kelly Weaver was going through a divorce with the suspect.
Police said Kelly Weaver had several apparent gunshot wounds.
Deputies say Larry Seagroves, a patient in the office with a carry permit, shot the gunman and held him until law enforcement arrived.
Officers reported that when they arrived, Seagroves was standing over the suspect pointing a semi-automatic handgun at him. The sheriff’s office says Seagroves goal was to hold the suspect down until officers arrived.
The sheriff calls Seagroves a hero.
Cassidy says the suspect went into the office intending to kill his wife, but fears more people could have been killed or injured had the suspected gunman not been stopped.
“I feel like he had one target but I think if anyone intervened there would have been a lot more loss of life or injuries and that’s where that citizen stepped in and eliminated the threat,” Cassidy said.
The sheriff also says dentist Dr. David Guy shielded someone with his body during the shooting and is also a hero.
Sullivan County School Board chair Michael Hughes told News Channel 11 Weaver is a school bus driver for Sullivan County Schools.
News Channel 11 also reached out to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and found that there is no criminal history on Weaver.
Harry Weaver has been charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office reports the suspect remains hospitalized at this time.
On Wednesday, Sheriff Cassidy said the suspect was undergoing surgery for his gunshot wounds.
The sheriff told News Channel 11 investigators interviewed multiple patients and employees who were at the dentist office at the time of the shooting.
The shooting prompted Colonial Heights Middle School and two nearby churches to go into lockdown. The minister at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, one of the churches that locked down, says his church has 80 kids in the daycare.
Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and troopers from Tennessee Highway Patrol assisted the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and the Kingsport Police Department.
Investigators told News Channel 11 they found the suspect’s truck in a nearby parking lot. Officers put crime scene tape in the area around the truck to process evidence. Authorities have not told us, what they found in the truck.
