Cyclist killed in Sullivan County hit and run crash

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL)   A search was underway early Thursday for the driver of a car that hit and killed a bicycle rider.

Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a car hit a man riding a bicycle in the 4000 block of Island Road in Bristol, according to Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Leslie Earhart.

The car, described by witnesses as small and dark in color with a loud exhaust system, was going north on Island Road when it hit the cyclist from behind.

The car then sped away, Earhart said.

“The bicycle rider, an adult male, was transported to the Bristol Regional Medical Center where he later died,” Earhart said.

As of 1 a.m. Thursday, deputies were looking for the car.

The name of the victim had not been released.
