UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Authorities in Unicoi County are searching for a suspect allegedly involved in a shooting Monday.

Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley said deputies are looking for Jason Daniel Vestal. Federal and state warrants have been obtained for Vestal’s arrest, according to Hensley.

Vestal was reportedly involved in a shooting in the Canah Chapel community of Unicoi County on Monday afternoon, Hensley said. The sheriff said two people were shot during an altercation on Valley Drive and Vestal left the scene on foot.

“He is homeless and a lot of people know him here in the county,” Hensley said. “We were using every resource trying not to tip him off that we were close on his trail. But after a certain length of time I knew it was time to get the word out asking for the public to help us.”

Vestal has a federal warrant for his arrest for violation of probation and is also facing charges of aggravated assault and felony possession of a firearm, according to Hensley.

Vestal is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him or knows of his location is asked to call 911.
