Community members outraged by Carter County church sign

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL)–Just days after the Orlando nightclub shooting, Pastor Jessie Price, of Beech Cliff Pentecostal Church in Carter County, placed the words: “God’s wrath may be getting started to fall on the gays” on a sign outside of his church.

Community members were outraged. Vickie Campbell, a Carter County resident, is one of the many people who stopped by to take pictures of the sign earlier this week.

“For them to put that that just broke my heart. I had to come see for myself if that was a hoax,” Campbell said.

Campbell soon realized it wasn’t a hoax.

“For a church to make that sign and to say what they did, that’s not right,” Campbell said.

Pastor Price has since changed his sign to “Happy Father’s Day” but people still came out to Sunday’s service so that the pastor could hear their side of the story.

The pastor declined to talk to News Channel 11, but the people who attended Sunday’s service like Tim Brent said he was welcoming.

“They truly believe they want to save people from going to hell. They think that maybe this is a good way to go about it,” Brent said.

A strong statement that Brent hopes will never be seen in Carter County again.

“Maybe he’ll consider that there are other effects to these signs, he heard the message, I guess that’s all we can do,” Brent said.

The pastor told churchgoers Sunday morning that he is trying to save people by any means necessary and has denounced the Orlando shooting.Copyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
