JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Washington County dispatchers confirmed a school-aged child was hit by a vehicle near a business on West Market Street in Johnson City Tuesday afternoon.
According to dispatchers, they received a call around 3:06 p.m. Tuesday about a white truck hitting the child on West Market Street near Village Pets, 711 W. Market St.
Dispatch said the child was not transported to the hospital by emergency personnel for treatment.
The parents of 13-year-old Andrew Jones spoke to us after the incident.
They told us they took him to the hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises.
Jones has since been released from the hospital, and told us the truck clipped his backpack, which caused him to spin and fall.
“I stepped like one foot in the second lane to cross, and then I saw the car and I went to turn, and it clipped my backpack,” Jones said.
When we spoke to Andrew’s father, Allen Laughren, he said he was just thankful his injuries were not severe.
“I was just relieved that he wasn’t hurt as bad as you know I was thinking he was, I was really relieved, but you know he’s really shaken up over it,” Laughren said.
We reached out to Johnson City Police for more information but did not hear back Tuesday evening.
As for Andrew’s parents, they said he will no longer be walking home from school.Copyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
