A police chase that began in Carter County ended with a multi-vehicle crash at a Johnson City intersection Friday afternoon.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says Carter County deputies were in pursuit of a stolen 2005 Toyota when it ran a red light and struck another vehicle at the intersection of East Unaka Avenue and East Oakland Avenue before 3 p.m.

The stolen vehicle crashed into a Johnson City Public Works pickup truck. The city truck ended up hitting three other vehicles parked at Dan’s Auto Repair. The driver, identified as city employee David Shipley, was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

According to THP, two suspects in the stolen vehicle tried to flee the scene but were captured by Carter County deputies. The driver, 32-year-old Ricky Ward of Elizabethton, was taken to the Carter County jail. The passenger, 31-year-old Miranda Benfield of Elizabethton, was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

State troopers say they were wanted on multiple warrants and are suspects in several burglaries.

Additional charges are pending, according to THP.

The crash remains under investigation.
